On the face of it, as traditional period townhouse in the capital. But this Eldridge Smerin-remodelled townhouse in London SW6 is a little more surprising beyond the front door.
The house, which is in one of the more sought after (so not cheap) streets in Fulham, has been redesigned to offer contemporary open plan living over four floors, with the space revolving around a central staircase. It’s something of a culture clash, but do you know what? It works. After all, Smerin hasn’t been given RIBA awards by accident.
As we said, open space, as well as glass, are key to the design. That open space (and the perception of it) creates quite a flexible living area. But right now, it’s laid out to offer five bedrooms and four bathrooms, along with a sizeable living area on the ground floor that leads into a high-specification kitchen and dining area, as well outside into the patio garden. Downstairs is a guest bedroom with dressing area, along with a further living room, utility, shower room and separate WC. head up to the first floor and you’ll be greeted to the master bedroom with en-suite and walk-in wardrobe, a study, a family bathroom and an additional bedroom, while two further bedrooms and a shower room take up the second floor.
Of course, cutting edge architecture in a sought after street isn’t cheap at £3,800,000, but it does offer up a few ideas of just what you can do with a traditional building without losing the tradition entirely.
